After a recreational trip to the plaza the previous week, we were ready to put our volunteer skills to work for the Every Day Matters campaign. This year the Futures split their day working between KVC’s Prairie Ridge Children’s Psychiatric Hospital and the Indian Woods Middle School. In the morning, our group visited the children’s hospital, where we participated in a tour of the facility and learned how Netsmart’s solutions play a crucial role in day-to-day operations. After the tour, we had the opportunity to channel our inner child, and play a variety of games with some of the children. One of the games we played was a spin-off of rock, paper, scissors that involved giants, elves, and wizards. Natalie even made a couple of new friends who kept referring to her as “Mini-Me”. The children and staff there were so friendly and everyone had a great time.
Making EveryDayMatters – Intimate Partner Violence or Domestic Violence
The numbers may surprise you, Intimate Partner Violence or Domestic Violence affects both men and women. Men are victims of nearly 3 million physical domestic violence assaults in the USA annually, but that numbers is considered very low, due to the stigma men feel they face with reporting. 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence during her lifetime. In fact 1 in 3 female homicide victims are murdered by their current or former partner every year. Victims and abusers come from all walks of life and every community (upscale residences to homeless). No one is immune from it. When someone commits suicide, the central question loved ones seek to answer is “why?” Understanding suicide, however, is akin to making sense of the nonsensical. It simply defies reason, logic and — for many — closure. Surviving family, friends will always struggle to understand, to accept and to live on.
In this short film, EveryDayMatters provides a snapshot in time of what will be a lifelong journey for family and friends of Ryan Hill. Their courage and transparency is a gift to all of us – that gift is awareness. And prevention can only come when awareness is raised. Special thanks to Ryan’smother, Linda and to Ryan’s brother, Stephen. Thanks, also, to all of Ryan’s family and friends who want you to remember you’re always needed …
Netsmart’s Futures program is filled with team building activities, networking events, educational luncheons, along with meaningful work and opportunities to learn about the industry, build our professional skill set, and grow as an individual. Here, we three Futures, Claudia, Brett, and Jake, reflect on our third week of our summer internship.
I have had my greyhounds now for 3 years. I found out soon after adopting my first greyhound that the whole greyhound community of volunteers comes with. I volunteer regularly and have done a variety of tasks and attended several events over the last 3 years.
This year for my EveryDayMatters day I volunteered to bring an adoptable dog to the Arlington Pet Expo. It is an all-breed event with rescue groups, breeders, vendors, entertainment and anything and everything else you could think of. Continue reading Making EveryDayMatter at the Arlington Pet Expo
