Meet the Clinicians: Amy Wilson

Amy Wilson – Senior Solution Strategist

Questions:

1. Tell us about yourself.

I was raised in Frontenac, a very small town in southeast Kansas. I only had 23 people in my high school graduating class. I graduated with my degree in nursing and obtained my RN in 2002. I worked nights and weekends as an LPN through nursing school at a local hospice agency in Wichita, Kansas. After graduation I became a hospice RN case manager and have been devoted to hospice ever since! I now live in Kimberling City, Missouri on Table Rock Lake, enjoying the lake life! My husband and I enjoy our time on the boat with our two boys, Gavin (22) and Kaleb (15).

2. Give us some highlights of your career in healthcare.

I started my career in the field as a certified hospice and palliative care RN and have had the honor of caring for hundreds of patients as they took their last breath. During my career, I went from field nursing to administration. I have cared for the terminally ill from all walks of life, children to the elderly. During my adventures, I have been part of many hospice initiatives including pediatrics, veterans and memory care programs and opening a new hospice inpatient unit (Hospice House). Being able to provide comfort and support to those facing a terminal illness and their families has brought me a feeling of purpose and passion.

3. Why did you make the change from clinical work to working at Netsmart?

I am a nurse and caregiver to my core and am often asked this question. As a field nurse I was able to impact the lives of the patients/families on my caseload, as an administrator I was able to impact the lives of the patients/families on each of my clinicians caseloads. Working for Netsmart, I am able to impact a much larger group of patients/families by promoting less computer, more care!

4. What makes you passionate about serving the clients/organizations who use Netsmart’s services?

Working on the provider side of the business I used several different EHR solutions, and I was not the easiest nurse to convince that computer documentation could be done at the bedside. I was skeptical about this new approach to care and documentation, but soon became the biggest champion for it. The reason I felt this way was because the documentation was not easy to use and caused a distraction between the clinician and the patient. Being able to provide solutions that fit into the established workflow to reduce documentation burden and improve outcomes without impeding patient care is what makes me passionate about the work we do here at Netsmart.

5. What does your perfect weekend look like?

On the water! We love to be out on the lake, boat tied up with friends in a nice cove for a day of family, friends and fun. I am lucky to have my sister and her family close by. With our crew and their family of eight, we are a party of 12, kids outnumbering adults. The perfect weekend is all of us loading up on the boat, turning on some good tunes and living our best life…swimming, fishing, tubing, knee boarding, soaking up the sun and hitting the on-the-water pizza place on the way back to the dock.
